Papers, 1822-1838.

A group of papers concerned with reparations sought by William Coffin to cover financial losses incurred in 1798 when French privateers seized two of his vessels loaded with oil. Claims for the loss of these vessels and cargo were assumed by U.S. Government, and known as French Spoliation Claims. Payments for such claims had to be authorized by act of Congress, which had not been forthcoming as late as the 1820's when the correspondence, printed circulars, sworn affidavits, and other papers here that document Coffin's intensive lobbying efforts for such a law were written. Coffin's principal correspondent was James H. Causten, an assistant to Congressmen John Burney and Benjamin Clew Howard.
